One other early symptom of pregnancy is excess saliva
or ptyalism. Sometimes your saliva tastes funny or
strange that you don't find it comfortable to swallow,
and sometimes the saliva glands just go into overdrive.
The extreme situation is when you need to spit it
out all the time though this is not a common condition.
The good part is that excessive saliva during pregnancy
only lasts until the first trimester, after which
it diminishes.
What
causes excessive saliva during pregnancy..
• Once again, it's the work of hormones.
• It can also be due to nausea that is preventing
you from swallowing the saliva and as such it collects
in your mouth.
• Heartburn, if you have it also contributes
to this
• Vomiting can also be the cause of excess
saliva (in the case of throwing up and heartburn
excess saliva is produced to deal with the digestive
acids that is accumulating at the back of your throat)
What you can do about excessive
saliva during pregnancy..
• Either brush your teeth or use a mouth wash
several times a day
• Eat frequent small meals
• Drink more water; for variation drink water
with freshly squeezed lemon juice
• Suck on hard candy or chew on gum or on a
cut lemon piece
• If nothing else works, visit a homeopath as
there are no traditional medicines to combat this
situation.
• And finally be patient; this will subside
most likely between weeks 12-14
