My mother keeps telling me that generations ago babies were using the big pot even before they could walk, unlike today where the typical age for a child to go diaper-less doesn’t happen until the child is at least 2.5 years old. Why is this so?

Too Young To Be Toilet-Trained | still is there anything I can do to prepare her for it

Yes, there are things you can help her with though when the time comes she will be doing most of it at her own pace. The most important thing (and I must say be ready for is some messy times) is to not wear a diaper for some time during the day everyday.

I have read that this helps your child understand the feeling of wetness and therefore develop some of her understanding of what potty training is all about. Being in the comfort of diapers prevents a child from feeling ‘uncomfortable’ due to all the pee and therefore delays the process.

So, some time with underwear on or even without one, preferably before bath-time allows for your child to get accustomed to this sensation of being wet and dirty. When the accidents happen, explain to your child that this is wee-wee and that everyone in the family does their wee in the toilet and that she too will be doing in it someday soon.
