Tell me more about the types of ultrasound scans available these days?

The traditional 2-D ultrasound provides (as its name suggests) a two dimensional image. What you will see is a flat looking image available one at a time. A display of upto 100 images occurs per second. It is the most common form of scan and can be performed on the abdomen and transvaginally. 3D ultrasounds are able to provide images which are not possible with 2D scans. The transducer captures thin slices or images of the subject which are then processed and presented as 3 dimensional images. With 3D ultrasound a volume of echo is stored digitally and shaded to produce photo-quality images of the fetus. 4D ultrasound goes a step further from here by enabling these life like pictures to move in real time. This allows the technician to study your baby's activity or movement e.g. yawns, blinks etc while inside the womb.
