My baby is a light sleeper. Is this a cause for concern?
Babies are exposed to noises while still in the womb,
so external noises should not be all that disturbing.
Still, parents often do their best to block background
noises with the hope that their babies will fall asleep
easily, to the extent of leaving toilets unflushed.
Living in this situation is going to impede his ability
to grow into a versatile little person in an already
dynamic noisy world. This will translate to the need
of creating such a noise-free environment at your child's
sleep time, in your home - rather restrictive when you
think about it.
Agreed, some babies are super-sensitive and tend to
wake up to the slightest disturbance but most babies
can learn to sleep through traffic noise and in daylight
without the curtains drawn; you don't even have to tiptoe
when you are in the room. There are tried ways of desensitizing
babies. Introduce a little noise and finally to a level
until baby becomes immune. Radio is a good device.
Start with zero volume and then turn up the volume little
by little until it is decently loud. Sometimes you can
tune in to an all-night music station or better still
get the static by shifting the knob a little. Again,
start on a low volume and work it up to louder levels.
