Toys and Play
BIG and small
Stacking games and fill and empty games are current
favorite with babies; they address some of baby's
interests: the relation of a big toy with a small
one, how does a smaller toy fit into the larger one?
Try these variations.
1. Fill a shoe box with plastic or wooden blocks.
Empty it in front of baby and watch her figure out
how to put the blocks back in the box.
2. Gather together small nesting plastic bowls or
spoons. She will enjoy putting them inside one another.
3. In the bath give baby a couple of nesting cups.
She will have fun putting one inside another or filling
them and emptying them with water.
Exploring light and dark
This game helps baby to explore the concepts of light
and darkness. Find a large cardboard box; cut an opening
on one side. Place the box so that baby can crawl
inside through the opening. Invite her to crawl inside
the box. It is darker inside than outside. Tell her
'it's dark in there'. Ask if she can see her hand.
Encourage her to crawl to the box opening and ask
her if it is light outside. When she crawls outside
tell her that she is crawling back outside where there
is light.
Show me!
Place two familiar toys in front of baby, one at a time;
identify them for her: 'This is a doll, and this is
your book'. Ask her to point to the one you name. 'Which
one is the dolly?' Any response is ok such as reaching
or touching or just looking at the toy. Praise her for
her response. If she doesn't respond, give her the toy
you named. Name it again. Then put it down and try again.
