What is baby-led weaning (BLW)?

Theoretically speaking babies at 6 months - the recommended stage for weaning - are able to sit in a highchair unaided, reach out and grab foods and with their pincer grip place it in their mouths, and have developed mature digestive systems coupled with the ability to chew and swallow foods. Based on this, the theory suggests that you can do away with the pureeing and spoon-feeding stage altogether. BLW simply means your baby will move directly to eating appropriate selection of what the rest in the family are having round the table using their hands.
