Diapering Do's

You will either use nappy cloths or disposable diapers. On the average, you will need about 10 diapers daily, if you choose to diaper your baby. Some Dos to follow:

Do keep a hand on your baby at all times when changing her diaper. When the baby is more mobile, use toys or storytelling as a distraction. Praise your baby for cooperating.

Do gently wipe your baby's genital area clean by using wet cotton balls, and washcloth or alcohol-free wet wipes.

Do remove a boy's diaper carefully because exposure to the air may make him pee. Wipe a baby girl's bottom from front to back to avoid urinary tract infection or UTI. (UTI is much more common in females than males)

Do change diapers frequently, and immediately after bowel movements. At this stage it will be often enough due to the frequent pooping.

Do apply zinc oxide based ointment when your baby has diaper rash, or Vaseline at other times to act as barrier against moisture.

Do remember to wash your hands thoroughly after changing a diaper.

Do remember rash can be prevented with frequent diaper changes.

Do leave your baby diaperless to allow his skin to 'air-out'.

Do wash cloth diapers in dye and fragrance free detergents to protect baby's sensitive skin.

Do bear in mind that juice can cause baby's poop to become acidic, causing a rash.

If the diaper rash continues for more than 3 days, consult your child's doctor - it may be caused by a fungal infection that requires a prescription.
