What are the ways to protect against melasma?

The natural ways will include minimizing sun exposure and covering up while you out in the sun. Use a sun-screen with SPF 30 on sunny days to reduce the amount of melanin production. Since sunscreens are not absorbed into the body it is practically safe to use while you are pregnant. Many skin products contain vitamin C which is also safe to use and definitely beneficial to preventing this problem. However these aids are useful in preventing the problem and not so much in treating pigmentation issues. Check with your doctor since there are many products out there that are targeted in treating pigmentation issues but are unfortunately not safe during pregnancy or nursing. These include licorice root extract, aha products etc.
