What are tantrums?

Temper tantrums are normal - a revelation of sorts for some parents, I am sure. It is also true that some children are more prone than others to expressing severe tantrums in their toddler years and beyond. When we think of tantrums, we automatically think of explosive angry behavior displayed by young children. We also tend to think that we are in some way responsible for the angry moments. Tantrums can range from the severe types e.g. hitting the wall, screaming at the top of the voice to the more simple whine or cry. It is important to understand that your little one is not deliberately being ballistic, at least not most of the times anyway. Tantrum-like behavior is your child's way of dealing with complicated feelings of anger, frustration and helplessness mainly because they lack the resources to deal with these emotions.
