Do
I have to eat special foods while breastfeeding?
If you have been following a healthy diet so far, then
you don't have to make special changes. However you
will need to pack in more calories (about 500 extra
calories) now that you are feeding your baby. A diet
lacking in nutrients however will need some changes.
Include unrefined carbs such as whole-meal breads, cereals,
brown rice, chickpeas, lentils etc which will provide
you with sustainable energy. EFA found in oily fish,
nuts and seeds are important for you and your baby.
Protein-rich foods including fish, meats, eggs and pulses
and your daily servings of vegetables and fruits are
a must. Eat sensibly and avoid excess.
